February 2015 and I fly out to Germany. Over the course of the weekendI view over 50 stallions. I’m selecting exactly the right one to put with my mare.
307 days later and any day now my mare will give birth. We hope to a boy but we couldn’t confirm it.
Preparation
The whole ordeal of prepping for a foal is quite nerve wrecking. While I’ve handled and helped youngsters, I’ve never been there for Day 1. My broken leg hasn’t helped either. I’m stuck unable to get out to see my horse and just hoping she can get on with it.
I get daily updates from the yard. The stable is ready. The cameras are (almost) up. I’ve bought ridiculous amounts to handle and keep the new born warm. I’m like an expectant grandmother!
Naming
But now after months of saying we can wait, I need to work out a name. Should it follow the letter for the year ,’J’? Should it relate to the sire, ‘Grey Flanell‘? What about the dam, ‘Bevrijdings Gould Bonzalma’? Maybe not.
Ideas, anyone?
