To inspire more writing, another resolution is to read more.

I’m now freelancing. It gives me the flexibility of time that I want to have. That does mean you need to be more conscious of how you spend your time. It’s all too easy to let the hours slip by when I haven’t got any work on. My broken leg also means I’m stuck to a sofa unless I have something specific planned. Becoming a literal couch potato is all too easy.

Distractions that are good for you

Reading is informative. It’s a stimulation. It’s inspiring. It’s also a wonderful distraction. Beyond helping me write each day, it’s good for you. Reading helps calm the mind, keep the brain sharp and sleep better. I can’t argue with the benefits.

Choosing what to read

A few years ago, a small Amazon package arrived on my desk. I was surprised as a) I hadn’t ordered anything and b) someone else knew my work address. It turned out a friend had sent me a book as a thank you for a ticket to the London Art Fair (which is coming up btw, shout if you want a ticket).

Like a list of the great movies you need to watch before you die, I’m open to suggestions. Novels, articles, non-fiction. Likely it’ll feature at some point on here too. Hopefully encouraging others to read a little bit more too.
